About opal colours photographs: The colours of an opal shown in photographs vary in different lighting and the angle of the shots. In the photos of this opal, the first photo was taken under the brightest led light, the others were taken indoors using differing shades of brightness to show the truest images of the stone. White Opal: White Opal is found across a large area in South Australia and is mined mainly at Coober Pedy, Andamooka and Mintabie. Also called Light Opal, their pale milky white background elicits usually subtle colours. Crystal Opal: An opal that is translucent or transparent and has a play-of-colour within the stone is called a “Crystal opal”. They can come from a number of opal producing areas - if from Lightning Ridge they are called a “Black Crystal” and if from South Australia, a “White Crystal”. Body Tone: Opal body tone is classified using the chart below. This chart provided by the Opal Association here in Australia shows the different classifications of body tone in Australian opals when viewed face-up ranging from the darkest 'N1' to the lightest 'N9'.
